One of the challenges in designing finished
lower levels is all of the different uses that clients sometimes
want to accomplish in them.
Here, our clients started with a totally unfinished basement
but wanted to create a Home Theater Room, (2) Offices that could be
converted to Bedrooms, a Guest Bedroom Suite, and an open
Entertaining Area with a Bar/Kitchenette, Television Area, and
Billiards Area.
To achieve the Home Theater, over 20,000
pounds of load bearing concrete walls needed to be removed and
replaced with a series of steel beams and columns.
This created the perfect proportions for the room per the
audio visual consultant who was on the team from the beginning.
A central (3) sided fireplace, TV cabinet, and display area were
created to divide the open spaces and conceal existing structural
columns. Cherry and
painted cabinets, carpet and porcelain tile were combined to help
define “spaces within spaces”.
The resulting finished lower level nearly doubles the overall
space in the home and offered a great place to play, entertain,
watch movies, work, and house overnight guests all without any
additions.
