Remodeling
older houses in architecturally historic areas can be very challenging. On
these homes, sensitivity to the original architecture is typically a high priority.
In addition to relating the existing architecture,
responding to how the house performs in different seasons is equally important.
At this house, water, snow & ice were reoccurring natural elements on the
north side which posed continual problems for this homeowner during inclement
weather. The solution to those issues
became a drive-thru covered portico and entrance to shield those elements from
family and guests. Copper, slate,
painted brickwork and wood posts were exterior materials used on this project to
relate to the context of the original house. On
the driveway of the portico, a laser cut floral motif was designed to bond the
homeowner's love of the natural gardens with the architecture of the new addition.
On the interior, glazed cabinets, wrought iron railings and limestone floor
materials were incorporated and manipulated to capture the scale and detail
appropriate for the elegance of this English Tudor home. |
